Best supplements for joints: Reduce joint pain by taking this protein
BEST supplements for joints: Joint pain is a very common problem with a variety of causes. In older people it’s usually a sign of osteoarthritis. While it’s best to speak with your GP/physio for the best form of treatment, some health experts believe supplements are the answer.
Joint pain can be caused by a variety of health conditions, including arthritis, back problems, an old injury, illness or nerve damage.
Your first step should always be your GP/physio who will usually carry out a physical examination and may offer you painkillers/treatment for short-term pain relief.
Depending on how severe your pain is, some health experts recommend taking supplements - one in particular, collagen.
According to nutritionist Dr Josh Axe on his website, collagen is the type of protein found in our bodies that helps build joints and keeps connective tissue strong.
It states on the site: “Collage contains 19 different amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, that have essential roles for both mental and physical health, including keeping us pain-free.
“Because it acts like a sort of natural ‘glue’ in the body, holding things like our skin and joints together, collagen has many benefits like supporting healthy muscle growth, decreasing arthritis symptoms, healing the walls of our arteries and digestive tract, boosting energy, and helping us recover from workouts.”
Some of the main dietary sources of collagen include foods high in protein, such as beef, chicken, fish and egg shell membranes.
The site adds: “Collagen can also be found in supplement from, such as in collagen protein powders, or obtained naturally from consuming real bone broth.”
Joint pain may also be caused by arthritis, and another supplement which has been found to help with inflammation is omega-3 fatty acids.
“Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA [found naturally in oily fish] can be helpful if you have inflammatory arthritis,” said Arthritis Research UK.
“Or try eating oily fish instead – at least twice a week, but not more than four times a week.
“If you’re vegetarian, or fish oil disagrees with you, you can get other types of omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseed oil, rapeseed oil and walnuts.
“If you want to increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids, we recommend taking pure fish oil rather than fish liver oil.”
Quite large amounts of omega-3 are needed for the best effects, so 3g of EPA and DHA could be taken.
It will take about three months for patients to notice the benefit, Arthritis Research UK warned.
If the high doses of fish oils upset your stomach, try taking two or three smaller doses during the day, it recommended.
Other supplements that could benefit arthritis patients include vitamin E, selenium and vitamin D.
Arthritis symptoms can also include muscle wasting, restricted movement and warm, red skin over the affected joints.
There’s currently no cure for arthritis, but some treatments could help to slow down the condition, said the NHS.
Eating healthily could help to reduce arthritis symptoms.
Fruit and vegetables, starchy foods, meat, dairy and fish all form part of a balanced diet.
